Story Ideas

After spending some time reading and digesting the material, as well as looking into some of the basic Germanic lore that informs the Snow White and Rose Red story, I think we have 3 basic plot structures with which to build and expand from:
The first is a straight up adventure story. In this scenario, the protagonists would be the titular characters forced from their home deep in the woods. The hardships they face would be a great way to delve into their bond, and depending on the age of the two girls reality could be greatly warped to suit whatever direction we wished. The bear could very easily be a lumberjack or huntsman. The dwarf a skeevy, terrible old man. The reverse is also true. “Dwarf” in the world we create could be anything we so choose; a short bearded man with a penchant for mining, or some terrible monster who lusts after beauteous trinkets. And if that term invites too much familiarity, then we could pull from Old-English: “The Dwarrow” (or “The Dwarf”) could make for a chilling creature if we imbued it with the right qualities.
The second is a story told from the perspective of the Bear, and more of a dramatic thriller, with perhaps some mystery thrown in.  Here, one of the children is kidnapped, and it falls to the Bear and the remaining child to find her. This version of the story invites a lot of growth between the Bear and either Snow White or Rose Red. Could be romantic, or more of a father daughter bonding experience depending on how we spin it. As above, the world and its creatures can be as real or as fantastical as we wish.
Third, there’s the story of the love triangle in regards to the Bear, Snow White and Rose Red. This one will probably invite the most similarity with the source material, though finding a way to fit the dwarf in as anything other than a minor threat without detracting the focus away from the strenuous relationship of the two sisters might prove difficult.

I’ve also done a bit of sketching as per the assignment. I’ve thought a lot about the representation of the Bear. I really like the idea of him as either just this big burly man or some kind of huntsman.

Coming up with a viable project to present today was tough.   I really wanted to find a way to incorporate the strengths of multiple different artistic paths in order to create a strong desire for a team to work together beyond the simple parameters of the assignment. I wanted everyone involved to be able to proudly append this project to their portfolios. I’m really excited with what I’ve come up with. My project will include elements of Photography, Film (live action), and Animation. The way in which these things will be combined, as a basic gist, is as follows: A live action actor would be filmed and rotoscoped via animation into fantastical stop-motion photographed backgrounds! Project Update 3

The gang's all here. This is a group shot of the most current versions of my menagerie and a great way to show a pegged-down version of all of the gods and their designs. From here, it's all just tweaking and fine tuning of the concepts as shown above. From left to right we have: Tritet, god of smoke tendrils and the overseer of lost explorers. Durollu, god of confinement. Sodius, the god of salt. The Wanderer, a being as old as the world itself. Tundara, daughter of the deceased Mountain King and goddess of the snowy peak. And finally C'lorodoro, goddess of color, scrutiny, and detail. I'm really jazzed to have all my concepts pegged. I can't wait to render these characters in full color. See you next week!

Project Hiroshi

Artists have all manner of ways to ponder and puzzle over the strange and often inexplicable things that come out of their heads. It would be rather crass of me to simply leave that particular knot without a good prodding, but I'm a busy man. Suffice it to say, us guys is straight up crazy. You dig? Crazy as all, sure, but not without some amount of recompense, else-wise they'd throw people like us into padded rooms, forever locked away in loony town. Satisfying that bizarre itch that is producing content with nothing but your brain and your hands is a rewarding itch to scratch indeed. Bonus points the longer you have to wait to get at it.
